Palmira Lochridge: Kinda depends on what your definition of "fitness level" is.If you were a marathon runner, fitness level would be defined by endurance for a long time. If you were a sprinter, fitness level would be defined by extreme burst of energy for a short time.For most of us, fitness level is defined by cardio fitness which can be tracked by sustained heart rate over time in the given range by your age. So, back you your question - my opinion is that you should slow down until you catch your breath a bit, then speed back up again. This is the principle behind HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training.
