Should I use HDMI or Optical, or both?

Darnell Cutliff: You do not need to use optical cable if you are using the HDMI. Keep in mind HDMI cable is capable of the 7.1 audio and the optical is only at 5.1. Also TV does not have any HDMI output to connect to the receiver, it only provide an optical output. You connect the HDMI output oc the receiver to the tv. You would connect you other device to the receiver using HDMI cable. It would be more expensive buying both cable, than just buying a HDMI. Hope this will help you out.

Sammie Bocanegra: The best way to connect is via HDMI. HDMI has the ability to carry blu-ray surround sound formats that optical cable cannot.http://www.crutchfield.com/learn/blu-ray/setup_con...Connecting Your Blu-ray Player How to get next-generation audioTo get next-gen audio with a Blu-ray player, you'll need a receiver that has an HDMI connection or multichannel analog inputs. While you can use optical and coaxial digital connections to get standard Dolby Digital and DTS, they do! n't have the bandwidth to support the new, more detailed formats. If you have a newer receiver with decoding for the latest audio formats, like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, then your receiver will have an HDMI connection and this is what you'll want to use....Show more
