Will I make a decent living by becoming a special education teacher?

Elissa Curlin: Special education teachers in elementary make between $25,828 - $61,355 a year. If you live frugally and in area with low cost of living, you'd be fine.

Marya Fehn: Sure - assuming we have a similar idea of what is "decent." First year educators typically make at least $30K; however, you would most likely make more than that because of your special education qualifications. In most districts teachers earn more each year according to a salary schedule, so your salary would increase with time. The average for special education teachers nationwide is about $55K (basically, your mid-career salary). Assuming you are married to someone who is also working and who is making a comparable salary, you'd probably be making over six figures once you hit your middle age years. Obviously this is plenty enough to be happy with. Just be sure to budget your finances and be smart with your money in the early years....Show more
