Joel Feagler: The Nikkah is the Islamic wedding which is more important to Muslims than the Legal wedding which the government recognizes. We have to do two wedding because 1 for our religion and the other is to abide with the countries laws. Actually in terms of celebration the Nikkah is where the decoration, feast, guests are done.As for the Legal wedding, what I did was just go sign the papers and didn't make a big deal out of it as Nikkah is more important. So didn't celebrate the Legal wedding but the nikkah. Then comes the Walima where the groom's side have their party to show his bride to his family and friends. In most states, you get a marriage license, and the marriage license says very clearly that the marriage has to be solemnized either by a registered priest or a magistrate (in a civil ceremony). ! So, there is only ONE wedding. Getting a marriage license is NOT a wedding. If you do not get your marriage solemnized within a certain time, the license gets cancelled.
