Lita Thammorongsa: mamianka: Yes, I am majoring in Fine and Performing Arts. I have had many years of private voice lessons and have been involved in many choirs, show choirs etc. I also have 10 years experience playing piano, and 5 years playing guitar. I'm not looking for a "get famous" type job. I would just love to do anything in the industry :). I'm willing to work nonstop and do whatever it takes. I realize that its an extremely competitive industry. I saw that your are a music director? Do you have any suggestions on what types of classes outside for school I should be taking?...Show more
Jayson Brod: Unless you are MAJORING in a specific area of the performing arts, do not expect to make a living in it. It is difficult enough for people with degrees and many years of fine professional experience. What you have so far is pretty ordinary - you would need FAR more of a higher quality to even get in line.Added - THANK YOU for clarifying - you have got to admit! , when you read your ORIGINAL question, your qualifications and goals were pretty vague. First of all, we graduate thousands of people every year, with no hope at all of a fraction of them ever finding full-time career-length employment. And some that are working may very well be LESS talented and educated than you - but they know business, and how to get jobs. This is always the crux - getting the gig, not only form the audition, but knowing where to look and how to proceed in a businesslike way. Every summer, you should be doing summer theater, in whatever capacity you can - singing in the chorus for one show, taking tickets for the next, painting scenery for them both. There internships are valuable - you learn much, gain experience, and meet people. You PERSONAL qualities are invaluable - the stuff Mom taught you - be polite, prepared, cheerful,well-prepared, PROMPT (that is huge), write thank you notes ( another way to make sure that people who thing well of you ! have your name and address and phone!). The world and all bus! inesses are full of people who want to make themselves stand out - and resort to BAD ways to do it, modeling themselves on some of the *trash* that want to call themselves stars. Think of all the people with long and fruitful careers - they have all the right credentials, all the right work ethic, and are GOOD AND NICE PEOPLE. I have stopped hiring people on ego trips - there are ample people around who are good musicians and singers, work hard, and are pleasant to rehearse with. A musical group is like a family or marriage - you have to put up with each other for a LONG time, and under stress, too. This might not be the answer you were looking for - but trust me, it is all important. The old saying is "Be nice to all the people on The Way Up - because they will be there as you are on Your Way Down, too." Having said that - also know when it is time to gracefully leave- change colleges, teachers, get out of a relationship that is a Dead Shark - not being avaricious a! bout it - just knowing that you need to improve your situation - politely, gently, and definitely.Good luck- this is never easy, but it sure is wonderful when it works!...Show more
Lynn Hollars: problematic situation. check out at search engines like google. that will help!
Alecia Kaehler: EDIT: This is for the UK, sorry- don't know where you're from. Hello! You need to be at LEAST grade 8 by the time you audition to get on to a performance course, which shouldn't be too difficult for you by the sound of it. ;-) You have to audition, and perhaps do some sight reading or a theory exam, depending on the school you're trying to get in to. This might sound odd, but if you start working on your music as a "performance" rather than just playing it then it will really make you stand out more. There are hundreds of equally good musicians who audition for very few spaces each year; it's the musicians who stand out who get in. You need to show that you have potential, but! also that you have the charisma as a performer in order to make a care! er of it....Show more
